To mark World PR Day (yes, it’s a thing!), here’s a definitive guide to the language of communications.
STAKEHOLDER
Someone who was not involved in the process, does not fully understand the process and has final say on the outcome of the process.
SIGN-OFF
A starting point.
QUICK WIN
Something that will take six weeks, two rounds of legal review and a conversation with someone’s PA.
KEY MESSAGE
The thing everyone agrees on in the room and nobody says in the interview.
STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
The process of informing people that a decision has already been made.
HOLDING STATEMENT
A document prepared months in advance by the communications team that will be rewritten entirely by committee in the forty minutes after the crisis breaks.
BRAND GUIDELINES
A document that exists. That is available on the intranet. That has always been available on the intranet.
COLLABORATIVE
Describing a process in which comms was told about the decision after it was made but before it was announced.
RESILIENT
The quality most frequently listed as essential in a communications job description and the one that does the most work.
