Person Specification
ESSENTIAL
– Ability to translate a 47-slide PowerPoint containing no actual decisions into a clear, compelling narrative by Thursday.
– Comfortable working with ambiguity. (There will be nothing but ambiguity)
– Proven ability to maintain relationships with journalists, senior leaders, and people who reply to emails with a single question mark.
– Experience managing stakeholders who were not involved in the process, do not understand the process, and have strong feelings about the outcome of the process.
– Able to produce first draft within 24 hours. Able to produce seventeenth draft within 24 hours. Able to explain, calmly, why the first draft was better.
– Resilient. (See all of the above)
– Genuine belief that communication matters. That it changes things. That the right words at the right moment can shift understanding, build trust, and make an organisation worthy of the people inside it.
– Able to hold that belief on a Tuesday afternoon when someone has just changed the headline again.
DESIRABLE
– Degree in communications, journalism, English, or anything else that will be mentioned once at interview and never again.
– Experience with content management systems. Any of them. All of them. Whichever one we’re migrating to next year.
– Ability to explain what communications is, what it isn’t, and why it matters, to someone who has already decided it doesn’t.
– A very particular set of skills.
