To the Random Capitalisation colleague

A little fun first published over on our Linkedin page.

On behalf of comms people everywhere, can we talk about Random Capitalisation?

Not acronyms. Not proper nouns. Just someone, mid-sentence, deciding that “Document” deserves a capital D because it Feels Important.

“Please review The Attached and let me know your Thoughts by friday.”

“Don’t forget to Submit your Feedback on the new Policy.”

Nobody taught this in school. Nobody asked for it. It just appears, like a Word wearing a hi-vis vest for no reason.

Capitalising random Words mid-sentence doesn’t add emphasis, it adds confusion.

Your reader doesn’t think “Ah, important.” they think “Wait, is that a proper noun? Am I missing context? Did I skip a meeting?”

Meanwhile your comms team is quietly reformatting it back into a sentence, one lowercase letter at a time, saying nothing, judging everything.

If something actually needs emphasis: bold it, italicise it, or just write a clearer sentence. That’s it. That’s the whole toolkit.

Clarity doesn’t need a costume.

Stephanie Clark: "It’s refreshing, engaging, challenging in the most creative and fun ways possible. The support from fellow students and Hels & Lesley themselves is second to none and just makes the whole process a truly wonderful way to learn & develop in what is an ever-changing landscape and non-stop industry." Isabel Hope-Urwin: "I signed the comms team up to their Comms Creatives Academy while I was at The London Clinic, and it was such an injection of creative and strategic thinking. We got so much out of it." Huw Cook: "Just wanted to feedback how pleased I am we signed my comms officer up to Comms Creatives Academy... I knew she was going to be in great hands with you but I didn't expect to see the results so quickly. Being able to rely on Comms Creatives to broaden knowledge while creating an inhouse environment where she can put that learning into practice is the ultimate dream, especially when managing such a small team with a big remit."
